A boiling water tap does something a kettle cannot: it gives you filtered water at up to 98°C in about two seconds, from a lever on your kitchen tap, without a bulky appliance sitting on the worktop. That much is easy to like. The harder question is whether it earns its place in an Irish kitchen, and nobody selling one tends to answer that with actual figures.
So this guide does the sums. What it costs to run at Irish electricity prices, how that compares to the kettle you already own, what your kitchen needs before one can be fitted, and where these taps genuinely do not suit — including a plumbing setup that is still very common in older Irish houses.
No sales pitch until the end, and no pretending the numbers are better than they are.
The quick verdict
If your kettle goes on five or six times a day, a boiling water tap will save you money on electricity and a genuine amount of time. If it goes on twice, it will not — and you should keep the kettle.
That is the whole answer, and the rest of this page is the working behind it. The energy saving is real but modest: roughly €60 a year against the very common habit of filling the kettle to the top for one mug of tea, and closer to €18 a year if you already fill it carefully. What you are actually buying is the two seconds instead of the three minutes, and the appliance off the counter.
A boiling tap makes sense if:
- Tea and coffee happen all day, not just morning and evening
- Worktop space is tight and the kettle is in the way
- You have mains or combi pressure, not a hot press cylinder
- There is a socket in the sink cupboard, or one can be added
Stick with the kettle if:
- You boil water a handful of times a week
- Your sink cupboard is already full of pipework and bins
- You are on a gravity-fed system and not changing it
- You would resent a filter change two to four times a year
What a boiling water tap actually is
It helps to stop thinking of it as a tap. It is a small water heater that happens to be operated by a tap, and understanding the three parts explains almost everything else — the cost, the installation, and the maintenance.
Cold water comes off the mains and passes through a carbon filter mounted on the cupboard wall. From there it enters an insulated tank sitting on the base of the cupboard, where a heating element holds it at whatever temperature you have set. When you pull the boiling lever, water leaves the top of the tank and comes out the spout immediately, because it was already hot. Cold mains refills the tank behind it.
The second lever is an ordinary hot-and-cold mixer, plumbed the way any kitchen tap is. That is why these are sold as 3 in 1 taps: boiling, hot, cold, one spout, one tap hole.
Two consequences follow from that layout, and they are the two things most people find out too late. The tank needs a plug socket, and the tap needs mains-level water pressure. Both are covered further down.
What a boiling water tap costs to run in Ireland
This is the question everyone asks and almost nobody answers with numbers, so here are the numbers.
Irish domestic electricity in 2026 sits roughly between 32c and 42c per kWh depending on supplier, plan and whether you are on a day/night meter. Money Guide Ireland put a typical unit at around 35c including VAT in spring 2026, with Electric Ireland's standard rate at 34.75c. We have used €0.35 per kWh throughout. The annual comparison
Take a household that makes six hot drinks a day — 2,190 mugs a year, which is an ordinary family or a couple working from home. Water in from the mains at about 10°C, heated to boiling.

So the saving is about €64 a year against the overfilled kettle, and about €18 a year against a disciplined one. Not nothing, and not life-changing either.
Where these numbers come from, so you can check them. Heating water takes 4.186 kJ per litre per degree. A 250ml mug from 10°C to 98°C is 0.026 kWh; allowing for tank losses, call it 0.028. A litre from 10°C to 100°C is 0.105 kWh, and no kettle is perfectly efficient, so 0.12 is realistic. Standby is the manufacturer's published 2.2W figure for the tank used here — 2.2W × 8,760 hours = 19 kWh. Treat that standby line as a best case: a tank in a cold cupboard, or one left set to 98°C rather than 90°C, will use somewhat more.
One running cost is not electricity. The carbon cartridge needs replacing two to four times a year, and that is a real line in the budget rather than an optional extra — see the hard water section below for why skipping it is a false economy.
So does it ever pay for itself?
Be honest with yourself here. Divide the purchase price by €64 and you get the payback in years, and for most households that is a number in the mid single digits. If you already fill the kettle carefully, the electricity saving alone will never pay for the tap.
Which is why the energy argument should not be the reason you buy one. The reason is that boiling water arrives in two seconds instead of three minutes, several times a day, and the kettle stops taking up a corner of the worktop. If those two things are worth it to you, the modest electricity saving is a bonus rather than the case.

Plenty of people keep a kettle in a press for Christmas, when eight people want tea at once and a 2.4 litre tank has to catch up. That is a sensible thing to do and nobody should feel odd about it.
3 in 1, 4 in 1 or 5 in 1: which do you actually need?
The numbering counts what comes out of the spout, and it is worth knowing what you are paying for.
- 3 in 1 — filtered boiling, plus ordinary hot and cold. One tank, one filter, one tap hole. This covers what the vast majority of households want.
- 4 in 1 — the above, plus filtered cold water on the mixer side. Useful if you currently keep a filter jug in the fridge.
- 5 in 1 — adds chilled and sometimes sparkling water. This means a second unit in the cupboard, a CO2 cylinder in the sparkling versions, and a considerable jump in price.
The practical caution on 4 in 1 and 5 in 1 is cupboard space. An Irish sink cupboard usually already contains a waste trap, an isolating valve, a bin and whatever else has migrated in there. A single tank is around 330mm tall and 210mm wide; adding a chiller unit beside it is a genuine squeeze in a standard 600mm base unit.
If your main frustration is the kettle, a 3 in 1 solves it. If your main frustration is the filter jug taking up half a fridge shelf, look at 4 in 1. Chilled and sparkling are a want, not a need, and priced accordingly.
Will it fit? Five things to check before you order
This is the section that saves returns. Take a tape measure to the sink cupboard before you buy anything, and check these in order.
- Water pressure — check this first. Most boiling taps need a minimum of 1 bar and run best between 1 and 3 bar. If your hot water comes from a cylinder in the hot press fed by a tank in the attic, that is a gravity-fed system and it will not drive one of these properly. This setup is still very common in Irish houses built before the 2000s. A combi boiler or a pressurised (unvented) cylinder is what you want.
- A 13A socket in the cupboard. The tank plugs into an ordinary fused three-pin socket on a short cord — under a metre on most systems. If there is no socket under the sink, adding one is an electrician's job and often costs more than people budget for. Check before you order, not after.
- Cupboard height and width. A 2.4 litre tank is roughly 330mm tall, 210mm wide and 224mm deep, and it needs to stand upright on the cupboard base with room to get a hand around the connections. Measure past the waste trap, not to it.
- Wall space for the filter. The carbon filter mounts on a bracket and needs a little over 300mm of clear wall inside the cupboard, plus room to unscrew the housing downwards when you change the cartridge.
- Tap hole and worktop. A 3 in 1 fits a single standard tap hole. Check the height too — a boiling tap is tall, around 358mm to the top on the systems we stock, so if there is a window sill or a shelf above the sink, measure the clearance before you fall in love with one.
Can you fit it yourself? The plumbing is a single-hole tap fit with flexible tails, and a competent DIYer who has changed a kitchen tap before can usually manage it. The electrical side is different: if you need a new socket in the cupboard, that is work for a registered electrician. Fitting a tap to an existing socket is fine. Adding the socket is not a DIY job.
Hard water, limescale and why the filter matters here
Ireland has a lot of limestone, and a lot of hard water with it. Uisce Éireann is straightforward about this: hard water is "very common in Ireland's drinking supply", it is not harmful to health, and they are not required to remove it. They do let you check your own supply zone by Eircode, which takes about a minute and is worth doing before you buy a boiling tap. Why it matters more for a boiling tap than for an ordinary one: the tank holds water at 90°C-plus all day, and heat is what makes dissolved calcium come out of solution and bond to metal. That is the same process that furs up a kettle element, except the tank is the expensive part and you cannot take it to the sink and pour vinegar into it.
The carbon cartridge in front of the tank is what prevents this. It does two jobs at once — takes the chlorine taste out of mains water, and reduces the calcium and magnesium reaching the element. In a hard water area you are at the three-month end of the three-to-six month replacement window. In softer parts of the west you can usually go to six.
One thing not to do. If scale does appear around the spout, resist reaching for limescale remover or descaler — particularly on a matt black or brushed brass tap. Those finishes are coated, and descaler strips the coating unevenly across the whole surface, which looks far worse than the scale did. A damp cloth and a dry-off is the correct routine. Change the cartridge on schedule and the question never comes up.

Are boiling water taps safe with children in the house?
Fair question, and the honest answer is: safer than a kettle, but not childproof.
Three things work in your favour. The boiling side is a separate lever from the everyday mixer, usually marked with a steaming cup symbol, so it is not something anyone turns on by reaching across for a glass of water. That lever needs a deliberate two-step action — a button pressed or a catch released before it will move. And the flow is aerated rather than a solid stream, which cuts down splashback off the bottom of a mug or a sink.
Set against that, a kettle can be moved out of reach and a tap cannot. In a house with a toddler who can reach the worktop, the honest advice is the same as it would be for a hob: it is a hot thing at a fixed location, and it needs to be treated as one. Most parents find the deliberate lever action more reassuring than a full kettle of boiling water sitting at counter height on a flex, but you should make that judgement for your own kitchen rather than take a shop's word for it.
