Kitchen Heating — Radiator Valves and Pipe Covers for Irish Kitchens

The fittings that decide whether a kitchen radiator looks finished or looks plumbed in: radiator valves in matched pairs and snap-on pipe covers for the bare copper tails below them. All sized 15 mm × ½″ BSP, the domestic standard in Ireland.

A kitchen behaves differently from the rest of the house. Ovens, hobs and a fridge motor all add heat, so the room often needs less radiator output than its floor area suggests — which makes it a good candidate for a thermostatic valve that throttles back while you are cooking instead of heating an already warm room.

Choosing valves

Kitchen radiators usually sit at the end of a run of units and are fed from the floor behind a plinth, which normally means angled valves. Where the pipe comes out of the wall in line with the radiator inlet, you need straight valves. Getting that wrong is the most common ordering mistake here, so look at the existing valve before you buy.

• Angled thermostatic valve pack in matt black — holds the room to a set temperature on its own.
• Angled manual valve pack in matt black and anthracite — simpler, for a room you leave at one setting.
• Straight manual valve pack in brushed brass — for floor-fed pipework in a brass scheme.

Pipe covers

Snap-on collars and 200 mm sleeves for 15 mm pipe in chrome and matt black. They clip around existing pipework, so nothing is drained and nothing is soldered — about five minutes with a hacksaw to cut to length. In a kitchen the copper shows against a finished plinth, which is exactly where it is most noticeable.

Uneven radiators

If one radiator runs hot while another never warms, the Milano 15 mm flow diverter pushes incoming water further along the radiator instead of letting it short-circuit to the outlet. Worth trying before assuming the radiator is undersized.

Matching the finish

Take the finish from the tap. A matt black valve under a matt black kitchen tap reads as deliberate; a chrome one reads as whatever was on the van. In an open-plan kitchen where the radiator is in view, this is worth the small extra thought.
