Anthracite Thermostatic Radiator Valves – Kartell Straight TRV and Lockshield, 15mm

Most radiator valves still arrive with a white plastic head that never matches anything. This pack is the alternative for a dark radiator: a thermostatic radiator valve and a matching lockshield, both finished in anthracite grey on brass bodies, with a slim round Kartell design head instead of the usual bulky cap. On an anthracite column radiator, a grey designer towel rail or a black panel, the valves read as part of the radiator rather than an afterthought.

These are straight radiator valves: the pipe enters the valve in a straight line and the outlet sits directly above it. That suits pipework rising through the floor into a radiator with connections underneath. If your radiator connects at the side, check the pipe direction first — the guide below explains which pattern you need.

The thermostatic head reads the room, not the boiler. Set it once and it closes the valve as the room reaches temperature, so a bedroom or a utility stops drawing hot water when it is warm enough. The valve is bi-directional, so it can sit on either pipe, and it connects to standard 15mm copper with a compression fitting and to the radiator with a ½″ BSPT male coupling.

What the Numbers on the Head Mean

Each setting corresponds to a room temperature, from frost protection at * up to 32°C. Most living rooms are comfortable at 3; bedrooms usually sit at 2.

Setting * 1 2 3 4 5 Max
Room temperature 7°C 12°C 16°C 20°C 24°C 28°C 32°C

At the * position the valve stays almost closed but opens again if the room falls below 7°C, protecting an unused room or holiday home from frost.

Features & Benefits

  • Anthracite thermostatic radiator valve and lockshield — a complete pair for one radiator.
  • Straight pattern for pipework coming up through the floor into underneath connections.
  • Kartell design head — slim, round and finished in anthracite, not white plastic.
  • Temperature range 7°C to 32°C, with a frost-protection setting.
  • Bi-directional — fits on the flow or the return pipe.
  • 15mm compression × ½″ BSPT connections for standard Irish central heating.
  • Brass bodies rated to 10 bar and 120°C flow temperature.
  • Lockshield for balancing so every radiator on the system heats evenly.

Why Choose Anthracite Radiator Valves?

Because anthracite is one of the most popular colours for designer radiators, and chrome or white valves underneath one look borrowed from another room. Grey valves keep the whole fitting in one tone; add the anthracite grey pipe covers and even the copper pipe below the valve disappears.

Need a different shape or finish? The K-Therm chrome thermostatic radiator valves are an angled pair for side connections, and the ECO angled thermostatic valves in black suit a matt black radiator. See everything in heating, or browse bathroom heating and kitchen heating.

FAQ
Straight or angled radiator valves - which do I need?
Getting this wrong is the most common reason a radiator valve comes back, so check before ordering. Straight valves, like these, suit a pipe coming up through the floor into a radiator connected underneath. A floor pipe into a side connection needs angled valves; a wall pipe into an underneath connection can take angled valves too; and a wall pipe into a side connection needs corner valves. If in doubt, send us a photo of the pipe and the radiator end.
Does the TRV have to go on the flow pipe?
Not with this one. It is bi-directional, so it works on either pipe. Kartell still recommends the flow side where you have the choice. Fitted on either pipe, it relies on the heating system having an automatic bypass valve - most systems fitted or upgraded in recent years have one, and your installer can confirm. Without one, any bi-directional TRV can cause noise or radiator hammer when the valves close.
What temperature does each number give?
The frost setting * holds about 7°C, then 1 is 12°C, 2 is 16°C, 3 is 20°C, 4 is 24°C, 5 is 28°C and Max is 32°C. These are room temperatures, not water temperatures. Start a living room at 3 and adjust by half a number at a time over a day or two.
Is anthracite the same as black?
No - anthracite is a dark charcoal grey, softer than black. It is a common colour on designer column radiators and towel rails, which is why these valves are made in it. Next to a matt black radiator it reads slightly lighter; next to an anthracite one it matches. Kartell lists the finish as gloss.
Can I fit it to a heated towel rail?
Yes, if the rail is on wet central heating with ½ inch connections underneath and 15mm pipe coming up through the floor. A rail with side connections needs angled valves instead, and an electric-only rail has no water flow for a valve to control.
Why use a lockshield as well as the TRV?
The lockshield sets how much water the radiator can take at most. Your plumber adjusts it once with a spanner so radiators near the boiler do not take all the heat and ones at the far end warm up properly. After that it stays put, so the room temperature is controlled by the thermostatic head alone.
