Product description

Chrome Thermostatic Radiator Valves – Kartell K-Therm Angled TRV and Lockshield, 15mm

A matched pair for one radiator or towel rail: an angled thermostatic radiator valve for the flow side and an angled lockshield for the return, both in polished chrome on brass bodies. The Kartell K-Therm Refined head is fully chromed, with a small red marker for the settings and a frost-protection position, so it sits neatly beside a chrome towel rail or a white panel radiator.

The thermostatic head is what makes the difference to running costs. Set it to the level the room needs and it throttles the flow on its own as the room warms, so a bedroom or a bathroom stops drawing heat the moment it is comfortable rather than running flat out until the whole house reaches the hall thermostat.

Both valves are angled: the valve turns the flow through 90°. They take standard 15mm copper pipe on a compression fitting and screw into the radiator with an R½ (½″ BSP) male tail — the usual arrangement in Irish homes.

Check the pipework before ordering, because it decides the valve shape. Angled valves suit a pipe rising from the floor into a radiator with side connections, and also a pipe from the wall into a radiator with underneath connections. A floor pipe into underneath connections needs straight valves, and a wall pipe into side connections needs corner valves. Kartell states that its radiator valve range complies with BS EN 215, the standard for thermostatic radiator valves.

Features & Benefits

  • Thermostatic radiator valve and lockshield pair — everything needed for one radiator or towel rail.
  • Angled pattern for floor pipework into side connections, or wall pipework into underneath connections.
  • Chrome thermostatic head with a red setting marker — no white plastic cap.
  • Frost-protection setting keeps an unused room from freezing while drawing almost no heat.
  • 15mm compression inlet for standard copper central heating pipe.
  • R½ (½″ BSP) male tail into the radiator or towel rail.
  • Brass bodies, mechanically polished and chrome plated.
  • Lockshield for balancing — set once with a spanner so each radiator heats evenly, then left alone.
  • BS EN 215 — Kartell states its thermostatic valve range complies with the European TRV standard.

Why Choose a Chrome Thermostatic Radiator Valve?

Because valves are the part of a radiator you look at most and think about least. A pair of yellowed white-capped valves undoes a new towel rail; chrome valves finish it. Add the Enzo chrome pipe covers and the copper pipe below the valve disappears too.

For a matt black radiator or rail, the ECO angled thermostatic valves in black do the same job in a dark finish, and the ECO angled manual pair suits a towel rail that you would rather switch on and off by hand.

FAQ
Do I need angled, straight or corner radiator valves?
Look at where the pipe comes from and where it joins the radiator - it is the one thing that turns a valve order into a return. Pipe rising from the floor into a radiator with side connections: angled, like these. Pipe from the wall into a radiator with underneath connections: angled also works. Pipe from the floor into underneath connections: straight valves. Pipe from the wall into side connections: corner valves. Measure the gap too - the TRV reaches 55.5 mm and the lockshield 59 mm from the centre of the pipe to the end of the tail.
Which side does the thermostatic valve go on?
The TRV normally goes on the flow - the pipe that carries hot water into the radiator - and the lockshield on the return. If you are not sure which pipe is which, turn the heating on from cold and feel which pipe warms first; that is the flow. The lockshield is then used to balance the system, opened just enough that every radiator in the house heats evenly.
Is this valve WRAS approved?
WRAS approval applies to fittings connected to the drinking water supply, such as taps. A radiator valve sits on the sealed central heating circuit, which is not drinking water, so WRAS does not apply to it. The relevant standard for a thermostatic radiator valve is BS EN 215, and Kartell states that its radiator valve range complies with it.
Will it fit my towel rail or radiator?
It will fit any radiator or heated towel rail with standard ½ inch BSP connections fed by 15mm copper pipe, which covers most Irish homes. Older systems with thin 8mm or 10mm microbore pipe need reducers to step up to 15mm - your plumber will have them. It is designed for wet central heating; on an electric-only towel rail there is no flow for a valve to control.
Should every radiator have a thermostatic valve?
Nearly every one. The usual exception is the radiator in the room with the main wall thermostat, often the hall: if that radiator has a TRV as well, the two controls can fight and the boiler may keep cycling. Leave that one on manual valves and fit TRVs everywhere else, so bedrooms and bathrooms stop drawing heat once they reach temperature.
How do I clean chrome radiator valves?
Kartell's own guidance is a soft cloth moistened with water, then dried and buffed with a dry duster. Avoid abrasive powders, polish, bleach and anything containing alcohol or acid - limescale removers in particular strip plating. If bathroom cleaner or toothpaste splashes onto the valve, wipe it off straight away with a damp cloth and dry it.
