An automatic soap dispenser that reads your hand and doses without being touched. No pump to press, so nothing to push soap onto — which is the whole point in a kitchen, where the moment you need soap is usually the moment your hands are covered in raw chicken or flour.

There are two separate controls, and it is worth being clear about which does what. A touch pad on top handles power and dose — long-press to switch on or off, tap to cycle the four output levels. An infrared sensor under the spout does the dispensing. You touch the top pad when you set it up or change the dose; you never touch anything to get soap. Hold a hand under the nozzle and it runs.

It does not need drilling. It stands on the counter, or an adhesive plate holds it on any smooth wall. Elsewhere on this site we argue that adhesive is the wrong fixing for a dispenser, and that is true of a pump: it is pressed several times a day, and repeated downward force is exactly what adhesive pads fail at. This one is never pressed. The objection does not apply.

The dose runs through four levels — 0.3, 0.8, 1.5 and 2.0 seconds of output. A short burst suits hand soap at a basin; the longest suits washing-up liquid, or a house where children use rather more soap than the job requires. An LED row shows both the level selected and the charge remaining.

It runs on an internal USB rechargeable battery rather than disposable cells, so there is no battery compartment to corrode in a damp room and nothing to buy again. The 400 ml reservoir has a level window down the front, and takes foaming hand soap, ordinary liquid hand soap or washing-up liquid. A small refill bottle is supplied for filling it without mess.
