Astrid Dual Lever Kitchen Tap – Pewter, Tall Swan Neck

Pewter is the quiet one in the Astrid range. A warm satin grey, brushed rather than polished, it sits between the brightness of chrome and the softness of a matt finish — closest in appearance to what most people call brushed nickel. It does not throw light back at you, and it does not show every fingerprint, which is the practical case for choosing it.

Underneath the finish, this is a dual lever kitchen tap: hot on one side, cold on the other, both feeding a single tall swan neck through one tap hole. No second hole to drill, no hunting for the blend point on a single handle. The quarter-turn action has real weight to it, which is a large part of why the Astrid feels more expensive than it is.

It is a big tap. 375 mm to the top of the spout, 240 mm of clear height beneath the outlet and a 210 mm reach that covers a 1.5 or double bowl without leaning. If your sink sits under a window that opens inwards, measure to the sill first — this is the tap most likely to catch.

Water pressure is the thing that decides whether this tap suits you. The Astrid wants 1 bar as a minimum and is not built for gravity-fed water. A cylinder in the hot press instead of a combi boiler means it will dribble rather than run, and no amount of good intentions will fix that after fitting. Check first; there are better options below if you are on gravity.

  • Ceramic disc valves for a smooth, drip-free action with no washers to perish.

Why Choose a Pewter Kitchen Tap?

Because it solves a problem chrome cannot. Polished chrome behaves like a mirror — every splash and fingerprint shows until it is wiped, and around a busy family sink that is most of the time. A brushed grey scatters light instead of reflecting it, so the same marks simply do not register. Anyone who has spent a year polishing a chrome tap understands the appeal immediately.

It also sits comfortably beside stainless steel. Sinks, hobs, extractors and appliance handles are overwhelmingly brushed stainless in Irish kitchens, and pewter reads as part of that family in a way bright chrome never quite does. If your kitchen already leans grey and matt, this is the finish that disappears into it.

The trade-off is matching. Pewter will not pass for chrome next to chrome fittings — it reads as a deliberate grey, so it works best when it is not competing with polished silver an arm's length away. If the rest of the room is chrome, the Astrid in chrome is the safer choice; if it leans warm, brushed brass is the one.

For a similar brushed grey with single lever control, the Tivoli Brushed Steel is slimmer, cheaper and works from 0.5 bar — which also makes it the answer on a gravity-fed system. The Newton is the budget twin-lever option at 0.3 bar. Kitchen sink wastes are not part of our range, so no waste is included.

FAQ
Will it run properly on my water pressure?
Only on a pressurised supply. The Astrid is rated from 1 bar and is not designed for gravity-fed water, so if your hot comes off a cylinder in the hot press rather than a combi boiler or pressurised mains, expect a trickle. This is the most common reason a tall tap like this gets sent back. On gravity, the Tivoli Brushed Steel is a similar brushed grey rated from 0.5 bar, and the Newton works from 0.3 bar.
What exactly is pewter, and how does it differ from brushed nickel and chrome?
Pewter is a finish name rather than the metal the tap is made from - the body is brass, stainless and zinc like the rest of the range. As a finish it means a warm satin grey with a brushed surface: darker than chrome, softer than matt black, with a slight warmth to the grey. Brushed nickel is its closest relative and the two are frequently confused; nickel usually runs a touch cooler and lighter, but side by side in a kitchen most people would not separate them, and manufacturers use the words loosely. Chrome is the clear outlier - it is polished to a mirror, reads bright blue-silver, and reflects everything around it. The practical difference matters more than the naming: pewter and brushed nickel scatter light, so fingerprints and water spots barely show, while chrome displays every one until wiped. The catch is matching. Pewter sits beautifully next to brushed stainless sinks and appliances, but it will never pass for chrome - beside chrome fittings it reads as a deliberate grey rather than a match.
Pewter is unusual - will I be able to get another one to match later?
Probably, but it is the fair question to ask about any less common finish. Chrome and black are made in volume indefinitely; a colour like pewter is more exposed to being trimmed from a range. ELLSI makes this tap and also sells it under ETAL, its own registered trademark, which means two routes to the same stock rather than one - the part number PDT-000584 is what to quote either way. If you are fitting two kitchens, or think you may want a matching second tap, buy them together rather than a year apart. Ask us and we will tell you honestly what ELLSI is showing as current.
What does it look like against stainless steel?
Very much at home, which is the main reason to choose it. Most Irish kitchens have brushed stainless somewhere already - the sink, the hob, the extractor hood, the fridge door - and pewter belongs to that same family of soft greys. Chrome, by contrast, is noticeably brighter than brushed stainless and can look like it arrived from a different room. If your sink is stainless, this is the finish that ties the worktop together.
How do I clean it?
Soft damp cloth and dry it, mild soapy water if needed. Brushed finishes are more forgiving than matt black or lacquered brass, so an ordinary kitchen spray will not ruin it, but skip abrasive creams and scouring pads - they cut across the brushed grain and leave marks that catch the light. Wipe along the direction of the brushing rather than across it.
Will it fit my sink, and what is included?
Deck mounted into a single tap hole on a 58 mm base, so normally a straight swap for an existing mixer. Supplied with a pair of 1/2 inch threaded tails at 360 mm and a fixing kit. No waste - kitchen sink wastes are not part of our range and an existing one is almost always reused. Measure to your window sill first if the sink sits under a window, as this tap stands 375 mm tall.
