Product description

Replacement Water Filter Cartridge for Boiling Taps – Carbon Rod Refill, 3 to 6 Month Cycle

This is the part you change, not the part you fit. A replacement water filter cartridge for the inline filter on ELLSI 3 in 1 and 4 in 1 boiling water taps: the carbon rod element on its own, ready to twist into the filter head already mounted in your cupboard. No housing, no bracket, no tubing — just the refill, which is all most owners need two to four times a year.

Inside is an activated carbon rod. Going by its printed label, it adsorbs organic chemicals, odour, dirt and fine particles, and removes calcium and magnesium — the hardness minerals that would otherwise bond to the heating element in the tank as scale. That second job is why the cartridge has a schedule. Once it is spent nothing fails on the day; the tank simply starts scaling again, and the tea starts tasting of the mains.

Before ordering, look at the top of the cartridge you are replacing. This one has a screw-fit neck with two black O-rings, shown in the close-up photo. Older ELLSI systems were supplied with a different filter top, and this cartridge will not suit those heads. If yours does not match, order the inline water filter kit instead: it replaces the head as well, and from then on this cartridge is the only part you buy.

It goes on the cold feed only. The label rates it for water between 4°C and 38°C at up to 0.4 MPa (4 bar), with a flow of 3.5 litres a minute, and it must sit upright in its head. If your mains pressure runs above 4 bar, the label calls for a pressure reducing valve ahead of the filter inlet.

Features & Benefits

  • Replacement water filter cartridge only — the refill for an existing inline filter head, without paying for a second housing and bracket.
  • Activated carbon rod element for organic chemicals, odour, dirt and fine particles.
  • Calcium and magnesium removal so scale cannot build up on the tank's heating element.
  • Screw-fit neck with a double O-ring seal — the old cartridge twists out of the head and the new one twists in by hand.
  • Fits ELLSI 3 in 1 and 4 in 1 boiling water taps, including the same system sold under other badges (see the specification).
  • 3–6 month replacement cycle, set by your water hardness and how much you draw.
  • Protects the tap's warranty — the label warns that not changing the filter as instructed may invalidate it.
  • 2 year guarantee against manufacturing defects.

When to Change It, and How

Where you land in the 3–6 month window depends on your water. Supplies across Dublin, Kildare, Meath and much of the midlands are hard, so plan on every three or four months there; softer water in the west stretches it towards six. Two signs it is due: water from the boiling side starts to taste of the mains again, and its flow slows a little. A note in the calendar works better than waiting for either.

The change itself takes a few minutes and no tools. Turn off the cold supply to the tank, twist the old cartridge anticlockwise out of the head, check the O-rings on the new one are seated, and twist it in until firm, keeping it upright. Turn the supply back on and let water flow through the new cartridge for about 30 seconds to prime it before normal use.

Why Choose a Replacement Cartridge Over the Full Kit?

Because the head does not wear out — only the element inside it does. If your filter head is mounted, sealing properly and takes the top shown here, the cartridge is all you need, and it is the cheaper way to keep the tank protected year after year. Choose the full kit instead if the head is cracked or discoloured, if your system was fitted without a filter, or if your current cartridge has the older top.

This is the refill for the filter supplied with our chrome, matt black and brushed brass 3 in 1 boiling taps — the same cartridge for all three, because it lives in the cupboard rather than on the sink. Keeping one spare under the sink means the change happens on schedule rather than when the tea tastes off. Not sure it suits your tap? Send us the code on your current filter or tank and we will confirm before you order.

FAQ
Is this the whole filter or just the cartridge?
Just the cartridge: the carbon rod element that twists into the filter head under your sink. There is no housing, wall bracket, connectors or tubing in the box. If your head is already mounted and sealing, this is all you need. If you have no head, a damaged one, or a cartridge with the older top, order the inline water filter kit instead - it includes everything and takes this cartridge from then on.
How do I check my filter head takes this cartridge?
Look at the neck of the cartridge you are taking out. This one has a screw-fit top with two black O-rings, shown in the close-up photo. Older ELLSI systems were supplied with a different filter top, and those heads need the full kit rather than this refill. If the tops match, the cartridge is the right part. If you are not sure, send us a photo of your current cartridge and we will check before you order.
Will it fit an Etal, Hanstrom or Harmoni boiling tap?
Yes, provided the tap uses the current ELLSI filter head. The same boiling tap system is sold as Etal, Flode, Impromta, Ceki, Hanstrom, Harmoni, Bower Palma, Wodar, Liquida, Kranen and Vesta. ETAL is ELLSI's own trade mark rather than a separate maker, and the replacement cartridge carries the same part code, PDT-000053, whichever name is on the tap. Match the code and the filter top, not the badge.
How often should I replace it?
Every 3 to 6 months, according to the cartridge label. Hard water and heavy use push you towards the short end: households in Dublin, Kildare, Meath and much of the midlands should plan on three or four months, while softer supplies in the west can stretch closer to six. If the boiling water starts tasting of the mains again or its flow slows, the cartridge is due.
How do I change the cartridge?
No tools are needed. Turn off the cold supply to the tank, twist the old cartridge anticlockwise out of the head, make sure the O-rings on the new cartridge are seated, then twist it in until firm. Keep it upright - it is designed to be installed vertically. Turn the supply back on and let water flow through for about 30 seconds to prime the new cartridge before normal use.
Does skipping filter changes affect my warranty?
It can. The cartridge label states that failure to change the water filter according to the manufacturer's instructions may invalidate your warranty. The practical reason behind it is scale: once the carbon is spent, calcium and magnesium start bonding to the heating element in the tank, and the tank is the expensive part of a boiling tap. Changing on schedule protects both the tap and the guarantee.
Can I fit it if my water pressure is high?
The cartridge is rated to 0.4 MPa, which is 4 bar. If your mains pressure is higher than that, the label calls for a pressure reducing valve before the filter inlet. It is also for the cold feed only, rated for water between 4°C and 38°C, so it must never go on a hot supply. Not sure what your pressure is? Our guide to water pressure in Irish homes shows how to check it.
